The digital prescription

Estonian prescriptions are digital: the doctor sends the prescription straight to the prescription centre, instantly visible at every pharmacy. See your prescriptions — validity, dosage, uncollected amounts — at terviseportaal.ee. For your own medicines an identity document suffices; to buy for someone else, tell the pharmacist their personal code and show your own document.

Who this applies to

Anyone prescribed medicines. To renew a repeat prescription, contact your family-doctor practice — possible by phone or e-mail, no visit needed. The Estonian digital prescription also works cross-border in several EU countries: buy medicines at, for example, Finnish, Latvian and Polish pharmacies by showing an identity document.

Step by step

View the prescription in the portal

Log in to terviseportaal.ee with an ID card, mobile-ID or Smart-ID — see valid prescriptions, dosages and uncollected amounts.

Buy the medicines at a pharmacy

For yourself — with an ID document. For a relative — state their personal code and show your own document; no separate authorisation is needed for an ordinary prescription.

Renew the prescription in time

For chronic medication, contact the practice a couple of days before the medicine runs out — the pharmacy itself cannot renew prescriptions.

Common mistakes

Coming for someone's medicines without knowing their personal code — none are dispensed without it.
Letting the prescription expire — no medicine is sold on an expired one; a new prescription is needed.
Booking a visit just to renew — a call or e-mail to the practice usually suffices.

Frequently asked questions

How do I buy medicines for a family member?

Tell the pharmacist the family member's personal code and show your own ID. The pharmacist sees the prescription in the centre.

Does it work abroad?

Yes — the cross-border prescription works in several EU countries (e.g. Finland, Latvia, Poland); show an ID document at the pharmacy. The list keeps growing.
