Marriage registration
A marriage can be registered at any registry office in Latvia regardless of declared residence. Both partners file a joint standard application, and the marriage is concluded no earlier than one month and no later than six months after filing. The state fee is 14 EUR, paid on the application day; a ceremonial wedding is an extra municipal paid service.
Who this applies to
Step by step
File the joint application
In person, both together, at the chosen registry office with passports or eID. Adult Latvian citizens and non-citizens may also send the application electronically to the official e-mail of the office where the marriage will take place, if both signed it with a secure e-signature. If one partner is a foreigner, the application must be filed in person with both present in Latvia.
Pay the fee and agree on the date
The 14 EUR state fee (Cabinet Regulation No. 906) is paid on the application day. Agree the date and time with the chosen office; in urgent cases the official may shorten the minimum one-month term.
Register the marriage
The marriage is concluded on the set day with both present; witnesses (one or two adults) are optional and their absence is no obstacle. A marriage certificate is issued. For a fee the marriage can also be registered at another suitable venue within the municipality.
