The long-stay visa (D visa)

The long-stay D visa allows staying in Estonia up to 365 days and suits temporary work, study or another shorter-term purpose. For employment, the employer must first register short-term work with PPA. Apply at an Estonian foreign mission or, if already in Estonia, at a PPA office; bring purpose-proving documents, insurance and sufficient funds.

Who this applies to

Third-country nationals whose Estonian plans exceed 90 days but aren't permanent. The short-term work registration allows working up to 365 days within 455 consecutive days. If you plan to stay longer, apply for the temporary residence permit instead — the D-visa period bridges smoothly, but the visa can't be renewed indefinitely.

Step by step

Register the purpose

For work the employer registers the short-term employment with PPA before the visa application; for study obtain the school's confirmation.

File the visa application

At a mission or a PPA office in Estonia: the form, photo, travel document, insurance and purpose proofs. Pay the fee at current rates.

Plan the next step

If you want to stay, file the residence-permit application well before the visa ends — keeping your stay lawful during processing.

Common mistakes

Working without the short-term registration — a violation for both employee and employer.
Counting on endless visa renewals — for a longer life in Estonia the right path is the residence permit.
Travelling uninsured — valid health insurance is a mandatory visa condition.
