Re-registering a car (change of owner)
After buying a car in Lithuania you must contact Regitra within 10 days to declare the change of owner. Since 2021 the deal requires the Owner Declaration Code (SDK), provided by the seller. If the car is already registered in Lithuania with a valid roadworthiness test and insurance, the whole process can be done online via e.regitra — the new certificate arrives by courier.

Get the SDK code from the seller
The Owner Declaration Code (SDK) is mandatory since 2021. If the seller suggests signing without the SDK and 'getting the code later' — don't risk it. Also prepare the sale contract and an identity document (a driving licence does not qualify).
Declare the owner change
Within 10 days of signing — online via e.regitra or at a Regitra branch. If the car has a valid roadworthiness test and mandatory insurance, everything can be done from home.
Receive the new registration certificate
When ordered online, the courier delivers the new certificate. When selling your car you may keep the old plates for another vehicle — ask Regitra to store them (for a small fee).

Can I register a car without a driving licence?
Yes — ownership is not tied to a driving licence. But only a person with a valid licence may drive it.

First-time registration in Lithuania adds the pollution tax (based on CO₂), a mandatory roadworthiness test, and for non-EU cars also customs duty and VAT.
