EHIC card (EVAK)

The European Health Insurance Card (EVAK/EHIC) is a free card that provides emergency and necessary healthcare in another EU country, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Switzerland under the same conditions as local residents. It is valid for 3 years, and every traveller needs their own — even an infant.

Who this applies to

Anyone travelling in Europe — the card certifies you are socially insured in Latvia. EHIC does not cover patient co-payments abroad or repatriation costs, so travel insurance is recommended on top. Latvian non-citizens and third-country nationals cannot use EHIC in Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Denmark (except stateless persons, refugees and family members of EU citizens).

Step by step

Apply for the card

Electronically: on eveseliba.gov.lv under “Ģimenes ārsts un EVAK” → “Mans EVAK”, or via the Latvija.gov.lv e-service for EHIC issue. In person — at NVD centres in Riga, Jelgava, Kuldīga, Smiltene or Daugavpils (booking required), where the card is issued on the spot.

For a child — via the parent's profile

A child's card can be requested by logging into the child's e-veselība profile, provided the parent has a valid EHIC. If not, the parent applies for their own first.

Receive it and check the expiry

When applying remotely, the card is mailed to the given address. The expiry date is on the card and in the e-veselība “Mans EVAK” section — check it before travelling and avoid renewing during the summer peak.

Common mistakes

Assuming EHIC replaces travel insurance — it covers neither co-payments nor repatriation.
Applying right before a holiday — processing can take longer in summer.
Travelling with one card for the family — everyone, including children, needs their own.
