Parental benefit

The parental benefit is granted to one parent who is an employee or self-employed. The family chooses the total duration — 13 or 19 months — and the choice cannot be changed after the decision. With the 13-month option the base part is 60% of the average contribution wage. The benefit includes a non-transferable part — 2 calendar months per parent, usable until the child turns 8.

Who this applies to

One socially insured parent. While working and not on childcare leave, in 2026 the benefit is paid at 75% of the granted amount. In addition, regardless of employment, the family receives a one-off birth grant of 600 EUR and the childcare benefit of 298 EUR per month until age 1.5.

Step by step

Choose the period — 13 or 19 months

The choice sets the benefit rate and cannot be changed later. Before applying, calculate the amount in the parental benefit calculator (Latvija.gov.lv, “VSAA informācija un pakalpojumi”) and discuss the choice as a family.

Submit the e-application to VSAA

Via Latvija.gov.lv. The parental and childcare benefits must be requested within 6 months from the day the right arises — missing the deadline can cost part of the money.

The non-transferable part — for each parent

2 calendar months per parent, usable until the child turns 8, normally while on childcare leave. If the father (or the other parent) does not use their part, nobody receives it.

Common mistakes

Rushing the period choice — the 13/19-month choice cannot be changed after the decision.
Missing the 6-month application window from the day the right arises.
Giving away the non-transferable part — if the other parent skips their 2 months, the family loses that money.

Frequently asked questions

13 or 19 months — what's the difference?

The shorter the period, the higher the monthly rate: the 13-month option pays a base of 60% of the average wage; the 19-month option pays less monthly but longer. The choice cannot be changed later.

Can I receive it while working?

Yes — in 2026 working recipients not on childcare leave receive 75% of the granted benefit. The non-transferable part is payable only while on childcare leave or without self-employment income.

When is it paid?

For the previous calendar month — e.g. granted from 15 May, the first payment comes in June for the May days.
