Exchanging your driving licence

The exchange is purely administrative — no re-exam, your driving entitlements don't expire, only the physical card changes. The fee is 100 zł plus a 0.50 zł records fee (100.50 zł total); the ministry has announced a rise to 115.50 zł. Licences issued after 19 January 2013 carry an expiry date: 15 years for categories AM, A, B and related, up to 5 years for professional C and D. No-expiry licences from before 2013 will be exchanged compulsorily only in 2028–2033 — in 2026 you need do nothing if your card has no end date.

Who this applies to

Drivers whose card is expiring (the date in field 4b on the front and column 11 on the back — also visible in the mObywatel app), anyone who changed their surname (30 days to exchange), and holders of lost or damaged cards. Driving on an expired card is treated as driving without a licence — fines start at 1,500 zł. Professional-category drivers pass medical (200 zł) and psychological exams at every renewal; for ordinary category B an exam is needed only if the previous medical certificate was time-limited.

Step by step

Prepare the photo and documents

A current photo with the same requirements as for an ID card (face straight on), an identity document and your current licence. If your entitlements are time-limited for health reasons or you renew professional categories — add the medical certificate.

Submit the application and pay 100.50 zł

Online via info-car.pl or ePUAP with a Trusted Profile, or in person at the powiat (in cities — city hall) transport department. Track the card's production status on info-car.pl using your PESEL.

Collect the new card

Usually up to 9 working days. You hand in the old card when collecting the new one. Entitlements are unchanged — the new category B card is valid for another 15 years.

Common mistakes

Exchanging a pre-2013 no-expiry licence 'just in case' — the compulsory swap only starts in 2028, so an early visit is a needless expense.
Missing the date in field 4b and driving on an expired card — formally that's driving unlicensed, fined from 1,500 zł.
Forgetting the exchange after marriage — you have 30 days after a name change, then the card becomes invalid.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to retake the exam?

No. Only the card is replaced — your driving entitlements never lapse. An exam applies only when adding new categories.

How much does it cost and will the fee rise?

Currently 100 zł + a 0.50 zł records fee. The Infrastructure Ministry has been processing a rise to 115.50 zł (international permit — 40.50 zł), so check the current rate before paying.
