Registering a child's birth
A birth must be reported within three months. Registration is based on the parents' statement and the healthcare institution's electronic birth certificate (eVGP). The easiest way is online via the Registrų centras self-service or the epaslaugos.lt composite service “Gimus vaikui”, which also lets you order the related services and benefits at once. The child receives a personal code; paper birth certificates have not been issued since 2017.

Get the eVGP
The maternity hospital creates the electronic birth certificate — usually the same day or on discharge.
Register the birth
In the RC self-service choose “Naujagimio, gimusio Lietuvoje, gimimo registravimas” (parents pick “Esu vaiko tėvas/motina”), state the child's name and use the eVGP number. The service takes 2 working days. In-person registration at any registry office also works.
Arrange the follow-ups
Declare the child's residence (with one of the parents), register with a family doctor — a doctor or nurse examines the newborn within 3 working days of discharge — and apply for benefits via spis.lt. Some municipalities also give newborns a baby-starter kit.

No, registering the birth is free. Only the optional confirming extract costs money.
What if the parents are unmarried?
The birth is registered together with paternity acknowledgment — via the relevant RC self-service option or a notarised statement.
The child was born abroad — how to record it?
If at least one parent is a Lithuanian citizen, the birth is recorded in Lithuania — via the RC self-service or the Lithuanian embassy in the birth country.
